I have finished Course 1, 2 and 3 of Wilton Cake Decorating classes at Michael's. I took them out of order and just finished Course 2. I learned how to make tons of flowers using royal icing and other techniques. My final cake was a butterscotch cake with buttercream icing, royal icing birds, and lots of royal icing flowers.

Last weekend, I went to Indiana to visit my relatives. I managed to forget my camera for the main event, a going away party for my uncle. He is going to London, Africa, etc to be a missionary for four years. It ended up being a fun afternoon at a local community center with food, dessert, games and prizes. So I managed to only get a few pictures with my new camera. Here are the best ones. I'm still learning how to work my camera, and how to make a picture look better in Photoshop. I'm planning on taking a photography class in the next month or two with a friend. I'm so excited to learn more. This website was helpful so far. I've also been looking at other photographer's websites to get ideas. Of course I'm a fan of Laura Kathryn Photography. She took our wedding pictures and has a unique look to her pictures that I absolutely love. I like the old fashioned sort of look of this picture. I've also been following Mikkel Paige who is just starting her photography business, which would definitely be a dream of mine. If anyone has any tips on how to improve my photos please let me know! All comments welcome :)
I made a heart shaped cake the other day using my Wilton Heart pan that I got from Walmart awhile back. I made a marble cake with chocolate frosting. I iced the cake and made a swirly design. Then I made rosettes with pink colored buttercream icing on the whole cake and then a ball border. It was quick and easy..well quick as in an hour or so :) I'm really enjoying cake decorating. I wish it didn't take so long and that I had more time to play around with it. I'm looking forward to some cakes in the next few months. I'm making a Jayhawk cake for my nephew in May and possibly and Baby Shower cake for my sister-in-law. Next week I'll be finishing up my cake for Course 2 of Wilton Cake Decorating Class so check back. It's going to be cute cake!
I think this is my favorite page so far. It's so cheery and reminds me of the relaxing/fun time Cancun was. I'd love to go back or to any warm, sunny place. I'm sooooo sick of winter and SNOW! No more snow please! As I'm writing this I wonder if it is still snowing out right now.. I wouldn't be surprised if it is but am too lazy to look out the window. Oh well. Enjoy!
I baked a few sugar cookies from scratch. Normally, I buy the pilsbury refrigated kind and roll them out, but I was looking for a challenge. They turned out great and taste yummy without frosting. It was exciting to finally use a bunch of my 100 box of cookie cutters. I have always wanted to learn how to make really pretty and ornate details on cookies. Ever since I started my cake decorating classes, I knew I wanted to tackle cookies next. So I ordered a new cookie book called Cookie Craft from Amazon. It only took a few days to get here. It has lots of ideas on how to decorate cookies for all the different holidays. I made royal icing in different colors. Filled some pastry bags and ta da..this is what i ended up with. Since I didn't have a squeeze bottle to flood the cookies I used a toothpick to spread the icing around and man that took forever. Next time I'm going to pick me up a squeeze bottle. The two cookies below are my favorite, with the zig zag type design. The double heart cookie is royal icing with red sugar sprinkles on top and then I piped dots around the edges. Overrall, I think I did a good job for my first cookie decorating experiment.
Another digital scrapbook page.
Background is Shabby-Princess-Kristie_SF_LeavesPaper from www.shabbyprincess.com Hearts and bow from Scrapartist.com This weekend I made a football cake. I didn't have the pan so I used a Le Creuset casserole dish, which had a similar shape of the football. I made a chocolate fudge icing and covered the devils food cake with it. Then I used white buttercream for the striping. I also made some cupcakes with the left over cake batter. I then cut out a colts logo and saints logo out of fondant. I got the idea from www.bakerella.com, which is a neat site for baking ideas. I think the cake and cupcakes turned out pretty good overall.
I finally got a new camera! A DSLR - Canon Rebel Xsi 12.2 mp. It's awesome so far. I have only taken pictures on the auto function but can't wait to learn how to manually use it. My computer is broken right now but as soon as I get it fixed I'll post some pictures. The cake pictures in the previous post are from the new camera!
Spent the weekend baking a 3 layer stacked cake. Top layer is Lemon Cake with strawberry filling and buttercream icing. Middle layer is Chocolate Cake with peanut butter icing/filling. Bottom layer is Red Velvet Cake with buttercream icing/filling. It's all covered in homemade marshmallow fondant. My co-workers love my cakes. Pictures below are courtesy of my new DSLR camera. |
